A new book featuring the Mountain Legacy Project has just been published.

By Eric Higgs

To celebrate International Mountain Day 2025 we are thrilled to share a new book, Mountain Voices: The Mountain Legacy Project and a Century of Change in Western Canada

Mountain Voices features fifty diverse voices, including alpinists, artists, Indigenous knowledge holders, park and land managers, interdisciplinary scientists, archivists, and historians. Each contributor shares a unique and fascinating perspective through a short essay accompanied by a pair of photographs from the remarkable archive of the Mountain Legacy Project. Mountain Voices brings Canadian mountain landscapes to life through the passion and devotion of those who love the mountains deeply.

Rich with images and brief essays this large-format book is beautifully produced by the University of Calgary Press.

The book’s dedication reads, “For mountains, and those who care for them.” Peter Muir, President of the UIAA: International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation observes: “Mountain lovers, read and see in these pages the changes our modern habits have wrought. Learn. Advocate.”

Copies can be ordered directly from the University of Calgary Press, local booksellers, and on-line retailers across Canada and beyond.
