Re-reading Colonial photographic archives: the-first-of many images

Over the past year William (Bill) Snow, Stoney Nakoda Nation Consultation Manager at Stoney Tribal Administration and Mary Sanseverino, Research Associate from the Mountain Legacy Project colaborated on de-colonializing several historic mountain images. Bill worked with Stoney Nakoda Elders and Knowledge-keepers to determine the correct names and spelling for features and peaks long known to the Stoney people. Mary worked with the images to join these names with historic photos provided courtesy of Library and Archives Canada / Bibliothèque et Archives Canada and MLP’s collections.

The results for two places – Horâ Juthin Îmne, Lake of the Little Fishes (Lake Louise) and The Valley of the Wîkchemnâ Peaks (Valley of the 10 Peaks), Banff National Park – are presented here. We hope this is the start of a long collaboration and many such images!
